From Los Angeles to New York
“They Live and Let Die” is a personal photo-story project based on the 1988 film “THEY LIVE”, directed by John Carpenter. The film is based on the short story "Eight O'Clock in the Morning" by Ray Nelson. “THEY LIVE” is a story of two-everyday people joining forces to overcome immense, other-worldly obstacles in a challenging—1980’s poverty-stricken Los Angeles. The film is full of great characters and situations that accurately represent the social and economic hardships of their time, this story—sad to say—is more relevant today than ever.
The director provides a well-paced, well-crafted believable world—but there are many potentially story-rich “blink and you’ll miss it” moments of dialogue and visual details to watch out for. Moments that make you realize that the world of “THEY LIVE” stretches far beyond the periphery of L.A.
It is in these small details—that I pull inspiration for my own characters and events that would run parallel to film. Over the course of a month, I storyboarded an entire mock-episode for the shoot. I not only created new characters but their own personalized backstories and outfits to match each of their unique personalities. I scouted multiple locations that would seem believable in the world of “THEY LIVE”.
This short clip will give you some context into the world of “THEY LIVE”. It also features one of the best fight scenes in movie history.
Connections to the Original Film
To help incorporate my story and characters into the original “THEY LIVE” universe, I included certain key details from the film: such as our main character crossing the train tracks into L.A. (as in the opening scene of the film), matched wardrobe choices such as the: plaid shirt, blue jeans, backpack, and a sleeping bag as worn by Roddy Piper’s character.
One of my main characters (model Holly Stanton) was supposed to meet other drifters and aliens en route towards New York City—all these characters would have backstories that would tie into key elements of the original film.
Some examples of this are when: Frank (Keith David) tells Nada (Roddy Piper) about how “steel mills were laying people off,” another is when our main character encounters a traveler who escaped “a cult from out west”—referencing the rumor “The Drifter” (played by actor George Buck Fowler) mentions in the original film. I would’ve also explained how the Earth’s atmosphere is being terraformed by the aliens as mentioned by the scientist that appears on T.V. using a pirated television signal; “The Bearded Man”, (played by actor John Lawrence).

"THEY LIVE and LET DIE"-The Cast
Finding the right people to work with is always a challenge, but I was fortunate to find Holly Stanton who inturned included her father in the project.
Holly is a career model from Australia who's done work for various companies and brands around the world. You can follow her work by visiting her Instagram.
My brother, Jonathan drove us from location to location. He helped set up lighting and equipment, and also played one of the Fascinators.
1980s Retro Lightroom Presets
I developed a set of Adobe Lightroom presets to help me achieve that “iconic 80’s film look”. The inspiration for these presets come from not only this film, but also the look of old polaroids.
"THEY LIVE" Soundtrack
The iconic soundtrack was created by composers, John Carpenter and Alan Howarth. Below is the opening track to the film. The slow, downbeat, minimal synth track helps create the “down on your luck—feeling of hopelessness” the characters embody in the world of “THEY LIVE”.
In 2017, John Carpenter released “ANTHOLOGY”, a collection of his fantastic movie themes from 1974-1998. It’s available for digital download and in vinyl format. This collection is a great addition to not only fans of his movies but fans of synth music.
